Benfica win Next Generation Trophy crown

Young Bulls fifth in home tournament

Gerhard Gruber's young Salzburg team took fifth place in the tournament on its final day with a 2-1 win over Red Bull Brasil. The Young Bulls were only beaten on a penalty shoot-out in five games - to strong Danish side FC Midtjylland.

Benfica ultimately won the Next Generation Trophy - beating Manchester City in a dramatic final.

Ernst Tanner (Youth and Academy Head):

This year's Next Generation Trophy lived up to all the expectations - even if the weather wasn't always kind - and was a great advert for youth football. We saw a lot of fantastic games at the highest international club level, which you couldn't possibly beat in terms of drama. We aren't displeased with the performance of our team, who were unlucky to go out in the quarter finals on penalties before taking fifth place with two more wins. I would like to thank all the helpers without whom a tournament like the Next Generation Trophy just wouldn't be possible. All the work that went into it and the perfect organisation ensured that the reputation of being one of the best tournaments for this age group in Europe was again lived up to.

Gerhard Struber (Salzburg U16 coach):

We won four of our five games over the three days of the tournament and drew in the quarter final. In these kinds of competitions the margin between winning and losing is often tiny. We experienced that with the painful, and somewhat unfortunate defeat to Midtjylland on penalties. We are doing really well, and the team lived up to the standards they seek well, with their performance really superb for large parts. I am very proud about how our youngsters performed - and we can take a lot from the tournament for the future.
