Dayot Upamecano has left FC Red Bull Salzburg to join RB Leipzig, who are currently second in the German Bundesliga. The 18-year-old Frenchman came to Salzburg in July 2015, playing 23 competitive matches and becoming an Austrian champion and cup winner with the Red Bulls. The defender has also made 16 appearances for FC Liefering and played three times for Salzburg's UEFA Youth League team.
His extraordinary development and strong performances in Austrian and European competitions for the Red Bulls has created interest from some of the biggest clubs in the game. Upamecano decided after around 18 months in Salzburg to join the second-placed side in the German Bundesliga.
Christoph Freund, head of football for the Red Bulls, says on the transfer:
We are very proud with the way Dayot has performed for us in recent months and to have been able to develop a player with his quality in the Austrian Bundesliga. Due to the many high-profile interested clubs and queries in the past few weeks, it was only going to be a matter of time until he left us, and he has decided to leave FC Red Bull Salzburg for one of the best leagues in Europe. Even if we are sorry to see him leave it is further testament to the magnificent work and outstanding opportunities to develop at our club. Upamecano is the fourth big transfer for us this season after Naby Keita, Martin Hinteregger and Bernardo. We are going to invest the income from these transfers again in young talented players who are going to help us succeed in Salzburg in the future as we try to meet our great ambitions.
FC Red Bull Salzburg wish Dayot Upamecano all the very best for his future in football.
