we enjoyed a thumping 5-0 win over austria Lustenau to take our sixth austrian cup win in our seventh consecutive final.
It was clear what was expected of both sides before kick-off. One of them had to win, while the others could try to spring a surprise. The opponents' tactical set-up was indeed unforeseen, with Ronivaldo doing a sterling job of coordinating their pressing. Our boys were able to quickly exploit gaps behind the first pressing line, however, and create opportunities in dangerous positions. Dominik Szoboszlai whipped a free-kick from out near the touchline in past Eres and into the net to give us the lead (19').
While the opponents were on the back foot we struck again as Hee Chan Hwang pounced on a poor pass from goalkeeper Eres. Our Korean wanted to tee-up Szoboszlai, only for the ball to hit Stumberger who accidentally turned it into his own net (21'). We were already well on course for a win.
The one-way traffic continued in the second half as our boys dominated at will. Majeed Ashimeru and Domi Szoboszlai were particularly instrumental in midfield. The latter played a dream pass to Noah Okafor, who was completely unmarked and sent a fierce shot into the net for his first competitive goal for the Red Bulls (53').
The trophy already had our name on it. We continued to pile forward though as we played some quite intoxicating football. Majeed Ashimeru capped his great performance by scoring from the edge of the penalty area (65') and Sekou Koita made it 5-0 (79'). The Malian's goal shouldn't have counted as a Lustenau defender hit the ball into his arm, but the referee Muckenhammer missed that.
It had no bearing on the result in any case. We are the 2020 Austrian Cup winners. Bring on the Bundesliga!
Szobo's first goal was very important for us. After that we had everything under control. It feels good to win this trophy. Our boys put so much in during the lockdown. I am very proud of them. We can enjoy this evening and the honour. Now we have the league, which we want to win too of course.
