We have underlined our dominance of Austrian football by lifting the cup into the sky after a superb performance. Even our opponents graciously saluted our strong showing.
expectant and then furious
It's a good 70 centimetres tall, weighs a sturdy 16.45 kilograms and shone yesterday in Klagenfurt perhaps even more than our delighted boys – it's the UNIQA ÖFB Cup Trophy! The competition used to have a more modest trophy, but there can't be too much nostalgia for that when it now has one as magnificent and glittering as the performance of Jesse's proteges. While the two sides cancelled each other out for a while, our Red Bulls were well on top by the end of the first period and barely gave the opponents a chance. Mergim struck at the ideal time, before Brenden smashed in the second and a delighted Enock capped the performance with our third. A few tears of joy under the night sky followed.
Respect from the opponents
LASK were more than gracious in defeat. Their coach Dominik Thalhammer said: "The quality, dynamism and speed of Salzburg are incredible." Their captain, Gernot Trauner, echoed his sentiments by saying: "Salzburg just sent in one attack after another. At some time your defence has to give." While they spoke these kind words, we were busy wildly celebrating our eighth Austrian Cup win in the past 10 years. This year we had a tougher route to the trophy than ever before, facing five Austrian Bundesliga sides and several top sides in Rapid, Sturm Graz and LASK.
now for the league title!
From the middle of the week, our focus will shift fully to our league campaign. The equation for completing the double is simple - if we win our next two matches, the title is ours. Jesse said "We aren't finished yet" after the final whistle yesterday, as if Rapid needed any more reason to be fearful after our performance. We could just seal our second honour of the season against our closest title-race rivals. We will keep a place spare for the shiny golden Austrian champions' plate right next to the XL cup we gained yesterday.
