Routes to the title

How we can be champions

Just four matches remain of the Tipico Bundesliga season. Every team can win a maximum of 12 points. As we go into the final sprint six points ahead of Rapid Vienna, you may think things look pretty straightforward for us. The maths isn't quite as simple in the champions' group after the halving of points at the end of the regular season, however.

Rapid Vienna are, along Sturm Graz and WAC, one of the sides that had their points tally rounded down to stop them being left with half a point. If these teams finish level at the end of the season with a team that didn't get rounded down, they will be ahead. That leaves the following possibilities:

champions after facing Rapid (30th matchday)

Nothing will be confirmed this weekend after we face Sturm Graz. Even if we win and Rapid lose on Sunday, our nine-point lead would not be enough to take us over the line. There will definitely be no confirmed champions until at least the 30th matchday. If we are leading by at least four points when Rapid arrive at the Red Bull Arena and we then beat them, the title is ours. If we are seven points ahead or more, a draw would be enough.

Title win AT LASK (31ST MATCHDAY)

If that doesn't work out, we would have to wait a few more days, at least. Rapid would need to be within six points of us after we play them on the 30th matchday. The Green and Whites would have a very tough final run-in against Sturm Graz (A) and LASK (H). We face the Linz side in the penultimate round of fixtures, with another potential chance to seal the title at the Raiffeisen Arena. If we end the round of fixtures more than three points ahead of Rapid, the title is coming to Salzburg again.

title celebrations in big finish (32nd matchday)

If we fail to take advantage of the first two opportunities, we could always claim the title in front of our own fans on the final weekend of the season. The numbers will be straightforward by then - stay ahead of Rapid, and it's ours.

If we do win the title, no matter when it happens, the champions' plate is to be presented on 22 May at the Red Bull Arena. A limited number of fans will be (hopefully) lucky enough to attend the match.
