it feels like an eternity since we saw fans at the red bull arena. there may only be 3000 on saturday as we face altach but it will be a very welcome sight indeed.
Our Red Bulls jumped right out of the starting blocks last Sunday in Wolfsberg. An untroubled 3-1 win against the team that finished third last season showed that we are already in some form! Without the kind of big disruption to our squad this summer we have been accustomed to, we have carried on seamlessly from where we left off last season. This weekend we welcome familiar and fairly favourable opponents to the Red Bull Arena. SCR Altach were unable to win a single point on any of their last eight trips to Salzburg. Our Red Bulls therefore go into the game with high expectations. There is no room for complacency though - it's not long since we had a horrible evening under the floodlights in Altach. Sidney Sam scored two as they beat our boys 3-2 on March in the lowest point of our last season.
Sam moved on to Istanbul at the end of the season, and one former Schalke player was replaced by another in Chinedu Obasi. Since joining as a free agent, he has almost single-handedly born the striking hopes for Altach, since Florian Jamnig has also left the club. Altach fans are still waiting for Samuel Oum Gouet to develop to meet some of the lofty expectations placed on him last season.
Jesse Marsch's team need to be alert. They go into the match just three days before their UEFA Champions League play-off in Tel Aviv with three players out due to injury or illness. The team have shown an insatiable desire for goals in their first two competitive matches of the new season and will be hoping to put in a similar performance.
One advantage we didn't have before the WAC match is that all the knocks picked up from the international break have now fully recovered. Dominik Szoboszlai was only fit enough to play 45 minutes last weekend but is now up to 100 percent.
Our first competitive match in front of fans since March will see us offering another matchday side programme. The fan park is to open two hours before kick-off. There is an option of having a photo taken with the champions' plate or cup trophy there. We ask you to please strictly follow all regulations so that we can continue to play in front of spectators! All the details can be found HERE.
Our new video player will make a new appearance as it leads you to an extra dimension in stadium visits. You can also vote for Man of the Match on the app. Plus you can take part in the Raiffeisen Tausend Euro shot again - for all of these you need to update the app!
Not available due to injury are Zlatko Junuzovic (thigh) and Oumar Solet (minor muscle problems). Jerome Onguene is also out.
Jesse Marsch on …
… looking forward to the first home match of the season:
We are really pleased to be able to play again in our own stadium finally in front of our own fans. It was a long time since we last had a competitive match in front of our fans. Even if only 3000 people can be there, we will finally see some spectators again. We want to feel their energy again, and we are ready to put in a top performance.
... team selection for the match against Cashpoint SCR Altach:
We will definitely put out a strong team with a group that will be ready to face Altach. There won't be too much rotation, as we are still at the start of the season and need rhythm and fitness. We have so many good players, that I actually can't pick a bad team. That is a great feeling.
Mergim Berisha on …
… his time in Altach and qualities of his former club:
I had a good year there, developed very well in Altach and was able to perform to the best of my ability. They have a young team again and will try to do what they do well against us. We need to stand our own against them by concentrating on the basics. We go into it unbeaten in 12 matches and we want to continue that run here.
