Change of coach at FC Red Bull Salzburg

Onur Cinel to take charge until end of season

Six matches before the end of the 2023/24 ADMIRAL Bundesliga, FC Red Bull Salzburg is changing coaches. Onur Cinel is taking over the Red Bulls until the end of the season from Gerhard Struber.

From FC Liefering to the Red Bulls

38-year-old German Onur Cinel, who guided our Red Bulls' UEFA Youth League team, has been released by FC Liefering for the final weeks of the ADMIRAL 2. Liga season. He will take charge of our Red Bulls for the end of the title race before returning to our co-operation club.

Cinel says on his new role:

After FC Red Bull Salzburg enquired, I knew straight away that I wanted to come to help the team, and I am very grateful for the faith they have in me. I am looking forward now to getting to know the players and staff better - and being on the pitch with them. We have to form a strong unit in a short period of time and perform to the highest level in every match so that we meet the aims of the club.

Onur Cinel

Sporting director Bernhard Seonbuchner says on the current situation:

With the way the most recent matches have gone and after making a thorough analysis of the situation, we have become convinced of the need to bring a new drive into the team for the end of the title race. We are putting our entire focus and concentration on staying at the top of the table and taking the Bundesliga title to Salzburg again. We are now focusing only on what comes ahead, and we are pleased to be doing that with Onur Cinel, who will be our head coach for the rest of the season. Onur is a proven expert - as he has shown as coach of our co-operation club FC Liefering. He also knows the way we want to play football, which is another reason for his appointment.

Our time with Gerhard Struber, who took over before the second match of the current Austrian Bundesliga season, is ending after a total of 34 matches (20 wins, 6 draws and 8 defeats) in the league, cup and UEFA Champions League.

Bernhard Seonbuchner says:

It's very important for me to thank Gerhard Struber on behalf of FC Red Bull Salzburg. We are grateful to him for his work and his huge dedication, and we wish him all the best for his future!

Gerhard Struber says on his departure:

I am disappointed, of course, also as everyone knows how special this job in Salzburg was for me. We had an extraordinary amount of challenges this season - starting with losing some key performers in an extremely young side, and we have continually had injuries to key players. As coach, I take responsibility, of course, for the bad results recently. It was an emotional time, in which we were able to enjoy a lot of great moments. I wish FC Red Bull Salzburg and their fans only the very best!
