21-year-old central defender Maximilian Wöber has joined from the top spanish club and has signed a contract running until 2024.
The talented young central defender is heading to Salzburg after spells with Rapid Vienna, Ajax and FC Sevilla. The youngster from Vienna can be used as both a central defender and a left-back.
The 21-year-old has been called into various Austrian youth teams. Despite his young age, he has already played five matches for the full Austrian national team.
a FAMILIAR FACE in AUSTRIAN FOOTBALL
Max knows Austrian football well, and Austrian football knows him well. He started to play at an early age in the well-known green space of the Marsweise on the edges of Vienna. After three years at Wiener Sportklub he joined SK Rapid Vienna. He played in all the academy teams there and graduated to the first team squad. After just 16 matches in the Austrian Bundesliga for them, he switched to Ajax
maturing amid the football elite
Despite being young and inexperienced, Wöber established himself at the Dutch giants straight away. In his first season in the Netherlands he started 16 matches despite picking up a knee injury. Last year he was an important part of the sensational Ajax team in the Champions League. With his intelligent performances in the group stage, he helped lay the foundations for the incredible run in the knockout stages - which he then followed from Seville. Wöber went in the winter on loan to the five-time UEFA Europa League winners, and the Rojiblancos only made his transfer permanent this summer.
from Andalucia to salzburg
The end of the season was rather disappointing. With Wöber sidelined with a meniscus injury, Sevilla won just five of their final nine matches of the season. That saw them lose their spot in the top four to Getafe, therefore missing out on the UEFA Champions League and even finishing behind Valencia in sixth. With his drive and ambition, Wöber has now seized the opportunity to try to help FC Red Bull Salzburg cause a sensation in the UEFA Champions League. Young, unconventional and hungry for success - FC Red Bull Salzburg and Max Wöber are a great fit!
Sporting director Christoph Freund says on our new number 39:
We are certain that Maximilian Wöber can make our team even better. He is left-footed and tactically very clever, which will make our play even more variable. He also has a lot of international experience despite his young age, and has already enjoyed some success in the Champions League with Ajax. We have some intensive months ahead with lots of important matches for the club. I am very confident that we can live up to this great challenge with our high-quality squad.
Max Wöber says himself on the transfer:
I am looking forward to the new challenge at a superbly run club. Wherever you look here, everyone is a top professional. The mentality is right. Not to forget that we have qualified for the Champions League. I really want to prove myself in that as a young player.
I would like to develop into a leading player here, stay free of injury and win big honours.
