African Cup: Dream Nene strike not enough for Mali

Karim Konate and Ivory Coast make AFCON semis

It looked like the Eagles of Mali were destined for the semi-finals, with Ivory Coast having a man sent off in the first period and substitute Dorgeles Nene putting his side in front with an absolute dream effort from long-range (71').

The hosts were not going to give up though, and their remarkable AFCON campaign took another twist with a last-minute goal forcing extra time. A penalty shoot-out seemed to be on the cards until former Salzburg man Oumar Diakite sent a perfectly timed backheel flick past the goalkeeper in the final minute of stoppage time to send Les Elephants through to the last four!

Nene was the only Red Bull to feature on the night. Sekou Koita of Mali and Karim Konate of Ivory Coast remained on the substitutes' bench. With matchwinner Diakite suspended for the semi-finals after seeing a red card, that could change.
