Legend to stop playing but stay

Alexander Walke ends playing career

The long and successful playing career of Alexander Walke is to end this season!

The extremely popular German, who will celebrate his 40th birthday at the start of June, has been with our Red Bulls since 2010. Atze has made a total of 227 competitive appearances and has gained an incredible number of successes - 11 Austrian titles, eight Austrian cup wins and three honours as Goalkeeper of the Season (2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18). Alex Walke had previously won two titles as part of the Werder Bremen squad (German champions and DFB Cup winners in 2004/05).

Still in Salzburg

Alexander Walke will continue to work at our club after the end of his playing career, however. He will be active in a role that he has already been involved in - as a youth goalkeeping coach at the Red Bull Football Academy.

First and foremost - we are really pleased that Alex Walke will continue to work for us and pass on his experiences as both a sportsman and person to our young players. We are keeping an incredible guy and successful footballer, who has accompanied the club and its philosophy for years and knows it really well. Alex has become a real Soizburger over the past 13 years. He will be a key part of our team until the very end. He always gives everything in training despite his relatively advanced age for a footballer and constantly pushes his younger team-mates.

A fantastic career as a footballer is now ending, and it definitely won't just be us at the club looking back at that with great respect. We won't just remember the many titles, but also all the incredible, emotional and wonderful moments with Alex.

Sporting director Christoph Freund

An incredible journey is coming to an end for me this summer. I have been able to experience so many wonderful things over the years and take a lot of positive memories with me. It's time for me to take a new path now, which I am already really looking forward to. I am grateful to FC Red Bull Salzburg for the faith they have had in me over the years, and the chance I have now. It is fantastic to be able to stay in football.
