Our Red Bulls will start the season with Christian Zawieschitzky as their new number one goalkeeper – even though the homegrown talent from the Red Bull Academy will retain his number 52 jersey at his own request.

For us as a club, it had been clear for some time that Chris would start for us sooner or later. In the summer, we came to the conclusion that he was now ready for this next step. Back in the spring, we placed great emphasis on him gaining as much playing experience as possible at FC Liefering, which worked out exceptionally well. So he's not taking on this role unprepared - we've been gradually preparing him for it. That he's a highly talented goalkeeper is beyond doubt. We also discussed this with Danny Röhl from the start, and he fully supports our decision. We offered Chris the number one jersey. However, due to his special connection to number 52, he was determined to keep that.

Just this past May, the 19-year-old extended his contract with us ahead of time, until the summer of 2030. The Tyrolean native joined the Red Bull Academy in 2020 and progressed through the various age groups. Now, the Austrian U21 goalkeeper is taking the next step in his career to become our first-choice goalkeeper, having already made five competitive appearances for our Red Bulls (including in the Club World Cup).

When I extended my contract, the club outlined this path for me. I was incredibly happy about this opportunity, and even my mother was speechless when it happened. I'm not nervous about the new role. I'm really enjoying things right now and am simply delighted that this trust has been placed in me. The anticipation definitely outweighs any nervousness. It also helps enormously that I've already played a few competitive matches - otherwise, the situation would certainly be different. Having the privilege of experiencing a unique event like the Club World Cup gives you at least a glimpse into what it's like on the big stage of professional football, which helps you be better prepared.

A personal touch in tribute to an NFL legend

Despite being offered the prestigious number 1 jersey, Christian has chosen to continue wearing his familiar number 52. He explained the significance of this to us:

The number 52 was my very first professional number and has simply become very important to me over the years for various reasons – not just so I don't forget my birthday on May 2nd. I used to enjoy watching videos of the American football legend Ray Lewis. His mentality and his presence in games really impressed me. At some point, I noticed that he also wore the number 52. Later, I saw a video where he talked about his childhood and youth – and there were some real parallels to my own story! Besides, I don't know any other goalkeeper with the number 52 – if I've forgotten anyone, I'm sorry – but this way, I can practically write my own story.

Our goalkeeping team is still set to grow and gain additional experience. Marcus Mann outlines the exact plans:

We will definitely be adding someone from outside the club to the goalkeeping team. We want to consider this very carefully. It has to be someone who fully embraces the role of number two, but also possesses the necessary quality to be able to play whenever needed. We are currently exploring the market and are in initial discussions, but this could still take a few days. Ultimately, what matters is that it's the right choice, that the goalkeeper fits the team's character, and that he fully supports Chris in his role.
