The Capitol, White House and Lincoln Memorial might all be well known, but with our boys heading to Washington, D.C. for their second FIFA Club World Cup clash, we wanted to take the opportunity to introduce the American capital city to you as the venue for our encounter with Al-Hilal.

The official name for the city is actually the District of Columbia, which is where the D.C. abbreviation comes from. The seat of the US government since 1800 was founded in 1790. Columbia is a derivation of the explorer Christopher Columbus and was once a common term for America. The unusual thing is that the District of Columbia is not its own federal state, nor does it belong to one - and especially not to the state of Washington on the West Coast of the USA.

Something for everyone

The political centre of the US is not lacking top-level sport in the slightest. The city has a team in all the top leagues - the NFL, NBA, MLB and MLS. The last great success was taken by the Washington Nationals baseball team, who won the 2019 World Series.

D. C. United have also been a big presence in Major League Soccer in the past. They have become MLS Cup Champions four times and taken the Supporters' Shield Title just as often. In 1998, they were even crowned winners of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The city has learned to value soccer for decades - which leads us to the final point …

Audi Field - football temple

Last but not least, the most important place in the US capital city for us is Audi Field. The stadium opened in 2018 is the home of the MLS team. With a capacity of 20,000 it is a neat new stadium that features solar panels on the roof providing around a third of its energy needs. The unusual arrangement of stands gives our second World Cup venue plenty of character, and we can't wait to play there on Sunday evening!
