From the 2023/24 season, FC Red Bull Salzburg are to enter into women's football with a long-term commitment to a comprehensive and sustainable concept. As a first step, from next season our Red Bulls will enter a U16 team into league football at Bergheim - a local town. The squad for the team will be drawn from young female players from the local region.
Co-operation with FC Bergheim
There are several advantages of forming a co-operation with FC Bergheim - most notably that they have a superb structure and several years of experience in women's football. The existing facilities will be improved in the future thanks to the know-how and financial support of FC Red Bull Salzburg. Sporting director Christoph Freund explains the strategy as follows: "We chose this option as there are currently not enough top-level players in the Salzburg region. We want to sustainably take talents step by step from the grassroots to the top of the game and grow our project with a solid basis. We will be using the same philosophy as we have for the boys at the Red Bull Football Academy, where we already have superb experiences.“
Further steps planned
We already have our eye on future steps. From the 2024/25 season, an U20 team in co-operation with FC Bergheim are set to take part in the Future League to pave the way to a first team. Christoph Freund says: "Our aim is to not only take part or do something that we have to. No, we want to develop top players in women's football and succeed in the long term."
