Junior Adamu moves to German Bundesliga

Austrian striker joins SC Freiburg

Junior Chukwubuike Adamu is leaving our Red Bulls and joining SC Freiburg in the German Bundesliga. The 22-year-old Austrian international has signed a contract with the side competing in the UEFA Europa League next season.

From the academy to the German Bundesliga

Adamu, who was born in Nigeria, joined us from Graz in 2015 (from the GAK youth ranks) and played through all the age groups at the Red Bull Academy, winning a total of three league titles.

He has appeared for FC Liefering (49 appearances, 26 goals and 11 assists) as well as our Young Bulls in the UEFA Youth League (scoring six goals in nine appearances). The 1.83-metre striker also went on loan for six months in 2021 to FC St. Gallen (Switzerland).

The striker capped six times for Austria ends his spell with our serial champions after making a total of 84 appearances with 23 goals and 11 assists - along with two Bundesliga titles and two ÖFB Cup wins.

We are proud that another of our players who developed in the Red Bull Football Academy has shown what they can do for us and made the leap to a big league. Junior has gone far over the years in Salzburg with plenty of hard work and dedication, and he now goes to a big league as an Austrian international striker. I am certain that he will succeed in the German Bundesliga too thanks to his way of doing things – and we wish him all the very best in that!

Sporting director Christoph Freund

I had an incredible time in Salzburg and am leaving the club with a smile on my face and so many great memories behind me. I am so grateful to so many people at the club and the fans for the support over the years - I'll never forget that. I am looking forward though too to my new club and the challenge ahead.
